Restoration of a Medieval Moated Gatehouse

Restoration of a Grade II*Listed Medieval Moated Gatehouse in North Hertfordshire – Scheduled Monument

The works consisted of extensive timber repairs to the existing structure including the sole plates, girding beams and corner posts. The roof timbers were extensively repaired with roof tiles and special salvaged ridge tiles to match the existing tiles.

The existing inappropriate pebble dash render was removed and three coats of lime render with riven oak lathes were applied to the external elevations and decorated in limewash.

A new oak floor was installed and the existing staircase was repaired and a glass balustrade added.

The existing gates were refurbished in our joiner’s shop and their associated ironmongery was utilised where possible.
